Awe-inspiring Building,
Fujimatsu is a seafront restaurant located inside the former residence of the Fujimatsu family — whalers and sake brewers who helped build Ojika Island’s economy. The restaurant’s backyard has a beautiful walkway leading to the private boating dock. There, from across the sea, guests can see the mysterious Nozaki Island with its sacred Okino-Kojima shrine. At Fujimatsu, locally produced ingredients at the peak of their freshness are turned into exquisite dishes that can be savored in the elegant atmosphere of the building.
Locally Sourced Ingredients
Fujimatsu sources its ingredients including fish, vegetables, and rice from local farmers and fishermen, ensuring the quality and freshness of its fare. The restaurant’s menu focuses on seasonality and the culinary identity of Ojika Island. Dining at Fujimatsu is an opportunity to support the farming and fishing families on Ojika as well as to get a taste of ‘island food’.

Sublime Atmosphere
Stepping through the lattice doors guests are awestruck by what is found inside. The spacious entrance area is lit with a warm light reflecting gently from the stone-paved floor. The tall ceiling is supported by wooden beams and pillars — the 170-years-old building has the loveliest of the nostalgic, rural atmospheres of Old Japan. The sliding doors of the banquet room are kept open with a 7-meter-long wooden table on display. Made from a single piece of Bubinga wood weighing one ton, this table was brought in from Tokyo as a part of the house’s restoration project. Led through the hallway with the floor-to-ceiling windows that showcase the beautiful Japanese garden, guests arrive at their private dining room. Both Western-style and Japanese-style rooms are available and each room is decorated with antiques from the Fujimatsu family’s collection. After finishing their meal guests are encouraged to take a walk in the backyard, where they can enjoy a magnificent view of Nozaki Island.

Experience the Stunning Legacy
Left Behind by the Owner of Ichiean
In Japan, there is a famous saying, “Ichigo-Ichie” (一期一会) which means “once in a lifetime encounter.” This phrase originated in the tea ceremony, where the host shows sincere hospitality towards guests. It is said that the former owner of the house was fond of the phrase, thus the east side of the building was named Ichiean while the west side Ichigoan. It is also said that the owner loved gardening, creating a fairy-tale-like masterpiece that can be viewed from the windows of Ichiean. In the daytime, the garden is bright and vibrant, but as the darkness falls it gets illuminated turning into an otherworldly sight.

The 21st-Century Take on Japanese Tradition
Ichigoan is for Those Who Appreciate Innovation and Design
In Japan, there is a famous saying, “Ichigo-Ichie” (一期一会), which means “once in a lifetime encounter.” This phrase originated in the tea ceremony, where the host shows sincere hospitality towards guests. It is said that the former owner of the house was fond of the phrase, thus the west side of the building was named Ichigoan while the east side Ichiean. The most distinctive feature of Ichigoan is its former “dirt floor” area called doma (土間 in Japanese). Traditionally the doma area of a Japanese house is used as a kitchen or a workspace where you can wear shoes. In Ichigoan the doma area has been modernized and made into an elegant kitchen and dining area.

Travel Just A Little More, Further Down The Path
Reach Oyake ー The Most Private Kominka in All of Ojika Island
Located in the peaceful Yanagi village, far away from hustle and bustle of the Fuefuki town, Oyake might be the most atmospheric kominka of all. The name Oyake 親家 is made up of Oya 親 character meaning “Parent”, and Ke 家, meaning “House”. A former samurai residence, one of the most prominent households in the area used to call Oyake their home. This beautiful kominka boasts large open spaces, separated by elegant sliding doors and a breathtaking garden, where Camellia and Hydrangea trees bloom in November and June, respectively. But the most fascinating part of the house is the attic that seems to be hiding some unspoken sectrets.

A Hidden Gem of an Old Fishing Village
Experience the Timeless Charm of Sakishoji
Sakishoji is hidden away in a narrow alley of an old fishing town. Dim light, seeping through the lattice windows on the first floor, creates an other-worldly atmosphere. This lighting goes hand in hand with the old, natural materials the house is made of, such as the handsome wooden pillars that support the high open-beam ceiling on the second floor. Listen to the sound of children playing in the distance, greet your neighbor with a warm smile, buy fresh fish and vegetables at a family-run shop just around the corner, immerse yourself in the island life.

The Crown Jewel of Ojika Island
Give in to Exquisite Luxury of Hoshu
The name Hoshu 鮑集 is made up of Hō 鮑 character meaning “Abalone”, and Shuu 集, meaning “Collection”. Ojika Island once thrived on abalone fishing which was hosted at the port next door to Hoshu. As abalone numbers kept declining in the neighboring seas the port went from bustling to tranquil. The dining area windows of Hoshu, overlooking the port, provide a glimpse into the daily life of islanders going about their business around the port: perfect to get a feel for the beauty and rhythm of the community. Those who wish to regain their inner peace can retreat into the traditional tatami room with a stunning Japanese garden view. After an exciting day of island adventures the cozy living room area with a large sofa is perfect to recover from the business of everyday life.

Inside the vast volcanic landscape,
Among the farmlands and rice fields,
Tucked away in the back alleys.
A house is the sentinel,
Holding monument to old values.
Welcome to Ojika Island.
Let the houses here remind you
What it means to be young with an old soul.
“Places Like Ojika Island are the Future of Japan.”
Alex Kerr played a key role in tourism development in Ojika Island.
He started a new project to convert surviving folk houses in Ojika into accommodations visitors could rent for a unique experience of traditional Japanese living.
Born in Maryland in 1952 he first came to Japan in 1964 at the age of twelve. The country’s beauty, customs, and traditions filled him “with a sense of awe” and he became fascinated with Japan ever since.
Kerr writes and lectures widely in English and Japanese on East Asian arts and the need to preserve Japan’s traditional landscapes and beauty.
In 2008 he was selected as Welcome to Japan ambassador for his contributions to drawing foreign travelers to Japan.
Books include Lost Japan (Japanese, 1993; English, 1996) and Dogs and Demons (2001).
I’m not sure I can articulate why, exactly, but I was drawn to this place from my very first visit. For a new sustainable style of tourism, I wanted to create, two components were required: a distinctively Japanese landscape and locals who are passionate about preserving it. Ojika had both. In 2007 together with Ojika town, I launched a style of tourism that hadn’t been explored in Japan until now, setting out on a mission to revive the economy of Ojika Island.
With the help of the country’s top specialists as well as local craftsmen, we renovated a number of old Japanese buildings “kominka” on the island, converting them into a one-of-the-kind lodging. We preserved the important elements of the traditional Japanese architecture found in these buildings while adding all the comforts of the contemporary world. This way we had not just preserved the buildings, but also took the culture of living that these old buildings represent and gave it a new life. Visitors from Japan and overseas now have an unprecedented chance to experience traditional Japanese life through these buildings.
Places like Provence in France and Tuscany in Italy attract visitors from all over the world with their natural landscapes and sleepy villages. The quaint town streets lined up with nostalgic Japanese houses, the sunset reflecting in the rice paddies stretching left and right, the boats rocking gently in a local harbor, the faint sound of cattle in the distance— Ojika Island is the Provence of Japan. It is the place to get away from it all.
Alex Kerr
Kominka Project: Houses Get a Second Chance
All houses remodeled through the Kominka Project were donated to Ojika town by the houses’ owners with hopes of Ojika’s bright future. An important cultural heritage, these houses were given a new life, hosting guests from all over Japan and the world.

A 100-YEAR OLD BUILDING
Please note that the Japanese folk house you will be staying in was built more than 100 years ago using natural materials such as wood, earth, and straw. As such the soundproof and insulation system is lacking compared to a modern building. Also, due to Ojika Island’s natural environment, especially in the summer season, you might encounter insects inside the house. We ask for your understanding and apologize for any inconvenience caused.
