An ancient shrine with a mysterious rock formation
Nozaki
OE-ISHI TREKKING (October-June)
ABOUT
After a pleasant hike inside the ancient forest dotted with megalithic mossy stones, you will come out onto the small wooden shrine that is more than a thousand years old. The shrine was built in 704 A.D. hosting parishioners from all of the Goto and Hirado islands, who would visit in fleets of boats. Behind the shrine stands Oe-Ishi, an imposing 24 meter-high vertical stone formation. Whether these magnificent stones were placed here by humans or naturally formed is still unknown.
