Nozaki Island
New! Nozaki Island Guided Tour
ABOUT
Explore the uninhabited Nozaki Island, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, learning about its unique history of the 'hidden Christians'.
The highlight of the tour will bring you to the former Nokubi village, where you will find the beautifully restored Former Nokubi Church. The three-year-long restoration works brought back the building's architecture to its former glory. Discover how the building came to be: the hardships of the people who were forced to hide their faith and their long-awaited liberation that Nokubi Church represented.
■The tour will begin in the former Nozaki village. Walk through its ruins, ending up at the residence of the head of the community, who was also the Shinto priest, which, unlike its surroundings, has been preserved thanks to the effort of Ojika Town.
It is said that the Nokubi Village families frequented the residence to pray at the Shinto altar that was inside. They disguised their Christian prayers as Shinto ones, maintaining their faith in secret.
■Just outside the village ruins, visitors will find the impressive natural landscape that resembles an African Savanna, dotted with hundreds of wild deer. Here you'll get to learn about the island's geology, as well as flora and fauna.
■Going up and down the steep Nokubi coast, all while taking in the breathtaking sea view, will finally bring you to the former Nokubi village, tucked away between the mountains. Discover the fascinating history of the 'hidden Christians' who were forced to make this rough terrain their home.
The tour will end at the Former Nokubi Church building: a symbol of freedom of faith for the 17 families that were parishes at the church that was built on their blood, sweat, and tears.
